France v Italy
Time Commentary
93' IT'S OVER!
Italy scrape through the 'group of death', joining Group B winners, the Netherlands in the last eight of the competition. Italy came out 2-0 winners on the night and will now play tournament co-favourites Spain. France were disappointing from day one, departing with just one point from three games. Au revoir les Bleues! France 0-2 Italy.
90' TIME ADDED ON
Three minutes of time added on left to play. Italy look happy to run the clock down, with qualification assured.
88' FULL OF VOICE
The Italian fans are full of cheer, having received news of the Netherlands' second goal in Berne. They'll paint the down blue tonight, I'm sure!
85' ITALY ON TOP
Italy are all over France, who are well and truly beaten. Meanwhile, in Berne, the Netherlands have doubled their lead.
82' AQUILANI ON
Gennaro Gattuso goes off to a rapturous applause from the Azzurri faithful. He'll miss Italy's quarter-final clash with Spain on Sunday.
79' GALLAS MARCHES ON
William Gallas has picked up a knock, but will play on through the pain. Just as well - Domenech has used all three substitutes.
76' POSSESSION PLAY
Italy are playing keep ball, teasing the ten men of France. This one's surely in the bag, with just over minutes left on the clock.
73' BUFFON HEROICS
Gianluigi Buffon makes a spectacular save, diving to his left to deny Benzema's cheeky curling effort. Italy's hero for the second time in as many games.
70' TIRED LEGS
France look deflated. If Toni gets his shooting boots on, Italy could run away with it. Big 'if' though, the striker's off the pace tonight.
67' BAD MIX
Domenech's mixture of young and old just hasn't worked. End of an era for France, but what does the future hold, I wonder...?
64' LAST THROW OF THE DICE
Raymond Domenech plays his third and final card, as Nicolas Anelka comes on in place of Sidney Govou. France now have three strikers on the pitch...
62' GOAAAAL!!!!
Daniele de Rossi has surely put the game beyond France, firing a ferocious free kick past the ailing Coupet off the leg of Thierry Henry. France 0-2 Italy.
60' DO OR DIE
The Netherlands have taken the lead in Berne, meaning Italy would make the cut with just a draw. Mind you, France are looking pretty lively and could well get a goal or two at this rate...
57' ITALIAN CHANGE
With tempers rising, Andrea Pirlo, already on a yellow card, makes way for Ambrosini.
54' GATTUSO RULED OUT
Like Pirlo, Gattuso collects his second booking of the tournament and will miss the quarter-final, should the Italians progress of course.
52' SITTING DEEP
The Italians are sat far too deep - camped in their own half - inviting the French to attack.
50' ON THE VOLLEY!
Italy clear only as far as Karim Benzema, whose dipping volley sails over the crossbar from 18 yards out. The next goal will be crucial...
48' BOOKING
Sidney Govou becomes the latest player to go into Lubos Michel's notebook, following a late sliding challenge on Fabio Grosso.
46' SECOND HALF
Right, so as it stands, Italy will join the Netherlands in the last eight of the competition. It could all change though, with 45 minutes of Group C football left to play.
45' HALF TIME
Italy go in at the break with a slender 1-0 lead over ten-man France. Andrea Pirlo netted the only goal of the half from the penalty spot after Eric Abidal saw red for a last gasp challenge on Luca Toni. Toni went on to fluff a whole host of chances before Coupet made a fine save to deny Fabio Grosso. France are rocking, but with such a slender lead, Italy are by no means home and dry. France 0-1 Italy.
44' RASH TACKLE
Should Italy progress, Andrea Pirlo will play no part in the quarter-final, following a badly-timed challenge on Karim Benzema.
43' OFF THE POST
Jeremy Toulalan tugs at Daniele de Rossi and Italy have a free kick. Fabio Grosso steps up and smacks the post with a superb effort from 20 yards out. Kudos to Gregory Coupet though, who got a vital touch to keep France in the game.
40' ALL OR NOTHING
The French are going to have to go for broke, perhaps taking a 'you score one, we'll score three' approach. Italy have wasted plenty of chances, so there's hope for France yet.
37' SIMPLY POOR
Karim Benzema - the star of Ligue 1 - disappoints once more, smashing a free kick straight into the Italian wall before spanking the rebound high and wide.
35' AGONISINGLY WIDE
Thierry Henry gets the better of Chiellini, but drags his shot across the face of goal. With chances so few and far between, you have to hit the target!
32' ALL ITALY
Italy are bossing the show in Zurich, with Zambrotta pulling the strings from the back. France are chasing shadows.
29' CHANCE AFTER CHANCE
France are in total disarray at the back. In the space of three or four minutes, Luca Toni spurns at least three decent chances to double Italy's lead. Will he ever score?
26' EARLY EXIT
Samir Nasri, barely on the pitch for 20 minutes, makes way for Jean-Alain Boumsong, filling the boots of the departed Eric Abidal.
25' GOAAAAL!!!!
Andrea Pirlo comfortably dispatches the penalty to give the Azzurri the lead. As it stands, Italy will now progress, with Romania currently drawing 0-0 in Berne.
24' RED CARD
Eric Abidal brings down Luca Toni in the box and Italy have a penalty. Lubos Michel had no option, but to send him off - that was a clear goalscoring opportunity. Pirlo will take the penalty...
22' CAUGHT FLAPPING
Gregory Coupet flaps at Andrea Pirlo's teasing corner, but somehow gets away with it. Sketchy 'keeping!
20' INEFFECTIVE
Both sides are a shadow of their former selves, devoid of midfield creativity and flair. Where's Totti and Zizou when you need them?
17' FOUL PLAY
Patrice Evra flies in recklessly on Antonio Cassano, and gets booked. Silly challenge - the ball was going out of play.
14' WING PLAY
Fabio Grosso's seeing plenty of the ball down the left, but his final ball leaves a lot to be desired. Toni won't break his Euro 2008 duck with crossing like that!
11' OFF THE LINE
Gregory Coupet and Claude Makelele combine to somehow keep out Christian Panucci's fierce header from a corner. That was close!
8' RIBERY'S CROCKED
Franck Ribery leaves on a stretcher, with what looks like a damaged achilles. Samir Nasri comes on in his place.
6' PHYSIO'S ON
Franck Ribery's on the deck in some agony. The French playmaker won the ball, taking a knock to his ankle in the process. I don't think he'll continue...
3' WHAT A CHANCE!
Fabio Grosso dinks one over the top, but Luca Toni's first time effort sails wide. He had more time, there.
2' EARLY PRESSURE
Franck Ribery puts some early pressure on the Italian back-line, winning the game's first corner, which comes to nothing.
1' WE'RE OFF
The final game in the 'group of death' gets underway. Tonight's referee is the highly-rated Lubos Michel of Slovakia. As it stands, the Netherlands and Romania will qualify ahead of the two 2006 World Cup finalists...
0' TEAM NEWS
As expected, a few changes from both sides ahead of the clash. Raymond Domenech gives Eric Abidal, Francois Clerc, and Karim Benzema the nod at the expense of Willy Sagnol, Liliam Thuram and Florent Malouda. Gennaro Gattuso and Antonio Cassano meanwhile, replace Mauro Camoranesi and Alessandro del Piero in Italy's starting XI.
0' PREVIEW
France face Italy in Zurich this evening, knowing only a win will do if they're to make it through to the last eight of Euro 2008. Italy on the other hand, could progress with a draw, albeit by the skin of their teeth, so long as the Netherlands beat Romania in tonight's other 'group of death' fixture. However, if Italy only manage a goalless draw with the French, then they will make the quarter-finals only if Romania lose by three goals or more in Berne. France captain Patrick Vieira looks set to miss out with a niggling thigh strain, while William Gallas should feature, having recovered from a slight knock. Roberto Donadoni has no injury concerns ahead of the clash, but like the eccentric Raymond Domenech, the Azzurri boss could tinker with his side's formation for the third game in succession. The permutations are endless, but whatever happens, one of the 2006 World Cup finalists and indeed Euro 2000 finalists, will be sent packing tonight.
