GAME OVER Germany make it through to the last eight of the European Championships for the first time in twelve years. One moment of class settled it in a fairly average game. Michael Ballack got the only goal, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Portugal. Credit to Austria though, who were a far-cry from the walkover we anticipated. In the end though, they lacked that crucial bit of quality in front of goal. Germany 1-0 Austria.

SECOND HALF No changes from either side as the second half gets underway. All or nothing from now on...

HALF TIME Still everything to play for here, with the score poised 0-0 at the break. Mario Gomez had the only real chance of the half, and what a chance it was. From just two yards out, the German striker somehow failed to hit the back of the net. Austria are not playing brilliantly, but are still in with a real chance of causing a massive upset. Shortly before the break, both managers were caught having a bit of a neighbourly tiff and despite having settled their differences, were sent to the stands. This could really go either way.
41'
SENT PACKING Unbelievable scenes in Vienna, with both managers receiving their marching orders. Both Loew and Hickersberger will have to watch the remainder from the stands.

21'
GOOD SPELL The Austrians are enjoying a good spell of pressure here, stroking the ball around with ease much to the delight of the Austrian faithful.
18'
ALERT 'KEEPING Jens Lehmann is on hand once more to put a stop to a dangerous Ersin Hoffer-bound ball over the top, smothering at the feet of the Austrian hitman.
16'
QUIET SPELL Not much happening in Vienna. After a good start from the Germans, the game has hit a stodgy patch.

5'
WHAT A MISS! Flop of the tournament Mario Gomez somehow misses the target from just two yards out with the goal at his mercy. 28 goals for Stuttgart last season apparently. That was a shocker!
4'
LEHMANN CLEARS Austria go route one with a simple ball over the top, but Lehmann's quick off his line to clear the danger.
3'
IN THE WARS Germany's Fritz is in the thick of the action early on, winning a free kick under Fuchs' challenge from behind. Ouch!

As expected, Austria's Martin Hiden comes in for the suspended Sebastian Proedl to earn his 50th international cap, while Erwein Hoffer replaces Roland Linz in attack.

PREVIEW Germany's Euro 2008 place hangs in the balance as they prepare for their Group B encounter with neighbours and co-hosts Austria. Germany only need a point, but defeat would send the pre-tournament favourites crashing out at the first hurdle. Joachim Loew's side were simply off the pace in their 2-1 defeat to group leaders Croatia, and will have to up their game against Josef Hickersberger's side, who have proved that they really do mean business. In the build up to the competition, Austria were expected to be the tournament's whipping boys, but after earning a last gasp draw against Poland, the Austrians are still in with a shout at making the last eight. Thirty years ago at the 1978 World Cup in Cordoba, Argentina, Austria knocked the former West Germany out at the same stage with a memorable 3-2 win. The Austrians have struggled to match that result in recent times though, with Germany coming out on top in the last four meetings between the European neighbours. Ahead of the clash, Loew has been boosted by the news that both Lukas Podolski and Philipp Lahm will be fit to start. Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended, while Marcell Jansen is sidelined through injury, giving the likes of Tim Borowski or Thomas Hitzlsperger the chance to shine in a must win game. As for the co-hosts, centre-back Sebastian Proedl is missing through suspension, with ex-Leeds defender Martin Hiden likely to fill the void. Having been eliminated from the group stage at both Euro 2000 and Euro 2004, the Germans are one defeat away from becoming the first team to crash out at the group stage of three successive European Championship tournaments. No pressure then ...
