Greece v Russia
Time Commentary
94' FULL TIME
The defending champions crash out of the European Championships at the group stage for the third time out of the last four tournaments. Greece were poor in both games and were perhaps lucky to escape a thrashing as Russia missed chance after chance on the break in the second half. The goal that did the damage came from Zyryanov who found the net in the first half after a blunder by Nikopolidis left his goal gaping. Russia now need to beat Sweden in their final game to go through to the knock-out stages. It finished Russia 1-0 Greece and the defending champions are out!
92' PANIC AT THE BACK
Greece have thrown everybody forward in search of an equaliser, but are lucky to still be in this as Pavluchenko missed yet another glorious opportunity to seal the win.
89' DESPERATE DEFENDING
Greece are clinging on as Russia burst forward time and time again on the break, looking to seal the win with a second goal.
87' NO GOOAALL!!!
Greece have the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle had already gone and the goal is disallowed.
86' COUNTER ATTACKING WASTE
Russia had four against two on the break there but failed to take advantage once again. They really do lack a clinical edge up front! If they had that then Russia could be considered genuine contenders for the title in Austria and Switzerland.
85' BUNDLED CLEAR
Greece manage to stifle out another Russian break, and the ball is simply hoofed up the other end of the pitch, where Giannakopoulos is snooping around the central defenders trying to carve out an opportunity.
83' ROOF OF THE NET!!!
Zhirkov curls in a superb free-kick attempt that had Nikopolidis beaten all-ends-up, but cleared the crossbar by inches and landed on the roof of the net.
81' CORNER CHANCE
Greece whip in a corner but Akinfeev claims the ball comfortably after it loops into his arms.
80' SUBSTITUTION
Amanatidis makes way for Giannakopoulos who is always capable of nicking a goal.
77' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Kolodine wastes an opportunity to test the 'keeper when he fires a free-kick into the wall.
75' ON THE BREAK
Russia look the likelier side to score as they hit Greece repeatedly on the break, but may be made to rue their lack of clinical finishing in the absence of their best two attacking players due to injury and suspension.
73' GREAT MOVE
Saenko finds Pavluchenko with a superb cross-field pass, but the striker dallied on the ball and was forced to shoot from distance when he could have had a better chance.
70' SUBSTITUTION
Bilyaletdinov comes off to make way for Saenko up front for Russia.
69' INTO THE 'KEEPER'S ARMS
Akinfeev breathes a sigh of relief after Charisteas could only fire his header straight at the Russian 'keeper when well placed.
68' GOOD PUNCH
Akinfeev clears the danger with a great punch as Greece pile bodies forward in hope of finding the goal that the desperately need.
66' DESPERATE TIMES
Greece are pushing hard but don't seem to be able to produce the quality in the final third that they need to prevent a defeat and stay in the competition.
63' GREAT BLOCK
Dellas saves his side after a defensive mix-up gifted Bilyaletdinov with the chance to shoot, only for Dellas to prevent a goal with a superb block.
61' SUBSTITUTION
Liberopoulos comes off for the goal-scoring centre forward Gekas as Greece go in search of a goal.
60' CRACKING ATMOSPHERE
The crowd have responded to a hugely entertaining second half so far and the atmosphere at Salzburg is absolutely rocking.
58' JUST WIDE!!!
What a move from Russia! Zhirkov fed Pavluchenko, who produced a silky skill to lay the ball off to Bilyaletdinov who should have scored the second for Russia, only to see his effort go wide of the post.
57' NO PENALTY
Bilyaletdinov throws himself to the ground in a desperate search for a penalty, but nothing is given.
55' OVER THE BAR
Basinas fires a shot over the bar when he really should have done better. Greece have massively upped their game since the break and look like they could yet rescue their tournament by getting back in this game.
54' GOOD PRESSURE
Greece lose the ball after a spell of pressure that saw Karagounis test the 'keeper with a fizzing drive.
52' SIDE-NETTING
Pavluchenko did brilliantly to get in on goal from out on the left and went for goal, only to find the side-netting.
50' FURY ON THE TOUCHLINE
Hiddink is furious with his side's defending of a simple long ball into the box that almost got through.
48' TESTING EFFORTS
Pavluchenko goes for goal for the second time in a minute and forces Nikopolidis into his second comfortable save.
46' POOR FINISH
Charisteas was clean through but tried to lob the keeper and never really got hold of it. What a good chance for the equaliser so early in the second half.
46' SECOND HALF
Russia get an extremely important second half underway.
45' HALF TIME
The whistle goes on a half that has seen Russia take a deserved lead against a surprisingly up-tempo, yet uninspired Greek side. Russia have been by far the better side going forward and were deserving of their goal, which came at the end of a great move by Hiddink's side, with Zyryanov taking advantage of a rush of blood to the head from Nikopolidis to tap home. Greece have to score or will be knocked out just two games into the defence of their title. At half time in Salzburg it's Russia 1-0 Greece.
44' OFFSIDE
Kyrgiakos is caught offside when a better-timed run would have given the defender a golden opportunity.
41' YELLOW CARD
Karagounis' second act of the game is to pick up a booking for bringing down Semshov, who was looking to launch an attack on the break.
40' POOR DELIVERY
Karagounis' first act is to slip when striking a free-kick into the box and it's easily cleared by the first defender.
39' SUBSTITUTION
Seitaridis is forced to make way so on comes the playmaker Karagounis, who most people thought would start this game.
38' OVER THE BAR
Bilyaletdinov fires a shot over the bar as Russia pour forward in search of the second goal. Hiddink's side are playing some great stuff now and look full to the brim with confidence on the ball.
36' DANGER IN THE BOX
Zyryanov almost gets on the end of a decent corner from Zhirkov, but the ball was turned behind just before the goal-scorer could connect again.
34' COULD HAVE BEEN TWO
Pavluchenko was clear at the back post but could only bump his header over the bar. The big Russian striker was offside in any case.
32' GOOAALL!!!
Russia show that they are a quality footballing side and take the lead in Salzburg. Nikopolidis got caught out of position by a lovely flick across goal by Semak and Zyryanov had a simple tap in to give Russia the lead. 1-0!
30' DECENT EFFORT
Patsatzoglou has a go from distance, but never really worried the 'keeper who dealt with the shot comfortably.
28' THRUSTING ATTACK
Russia launch a thrusting attack straight down the middle of the park, but it peters out amidst claims of obstruction.
26' CLEAR DIVE
Anyukov clearly dived there when under pressure at the back, but got away with it and won a free-kick.
25' LACKING SPARK
The Greeks look comfortable on the ball but lack spark going forward and will rely on set-pieces for most of their chances.
22' OVER THE BAR
Charisteas went for goal from a difficult angle, but his effort cleared the bar by some distance.
20' WHAT A CHANCE
Charisteas should have scored for Greece but took his eye of the ball and missed a free header from four yards, before Semshov cleared the danger.
19' CAGEY IN MIDFIELD
With the Greek midfield happy to stifle the play, it's down to the Russians to get this game going.
16' NO PENALTY
The Russians scream for a penalty, but no handball decision is given and probably rightly so.
14' JUST WIDE
Zhirkov picked up the ball on the edge of the area, but never really got hold of his shot which drifted wide.
13' TIPPED OVER
Pavluchenko tested the Greek 'keeper, Nikopolidis, with a decent lob, that the 'keeper just managed to tip over the bar.
12' SPARKLING ATTACK
Seitaridis almost finishes off a great move for Greece by curling in a dangerous low cross that the 'keeper just managed to claim.
10' WASTED CHANCE
Bilyaletdinov had the chance to deliver a cross into the Greece penalty area, but went for the shot instead, which only troubled those in row z.
8' UNFANCIED ENCOUNTER
This isn't the most glamorous of games in this tournament and so far has lived up to its billing. However, Russia do have quality going forward so that could change as the match goes on.
6' POOR CROSS
Torosidis had time and space to get the ball into the box but failed to produce a decent delivery and it was comfortably claimed by Akinfeev.
4' DANGEROUS ATTACK
Russia have looked dangerous on the ball, and Zhirkov proves the point, almost wriggling clear of the last Greek defender.
2' GOOD DEFENDING
Russia took the chance to whip the first ball into the box but Basinas dealt with it well and cleared the danger.
1' KICK OFF
The anthems have been sung and Greece get the game underway.
0' QUALIFICATION PERMUTATIONS
It's simple for both these sides; they cannot lose! A defeat for either side would send them crashing out at the group stage so both will be desperate for a win that would put pressure on Sweden for the second qualification place. A Russian win would also ensure that Spain win the group and avoid Holland at the quarter-final stage.
0' BIG MATCH PREVIEW
The defending champions Greece take on the dangerously under-estimated Russians with both sides looking to take advantage of Sweden's last-minute loss in the earlier kick-off. Greece were the surprise winners of the last European Championship, losing just once on their way to the title, to tonight's opponents Russia! The Greeks will be confident after cruising through qualifying, but could face a tricky encounter in Salzburg against the only non-seeded side to reach the finals. Guus Hiddink, as always, has produced a highly versatile side that makes the most of a number of really talented players. The downside for the underdogs is that star-man, Arshavin, is still suspended after seeing red in the final qualification game against Andorra. It could be a decent game with both sides desperate for a win.
