Austria v Poland
Time Commentary
94' GAME OVER
Austria's last gasp penalty strike sends Croatia through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008. Austria missed a whole host of chances in the first half, and after going a goal down, really didn't look like grabbing the equaliser. The Poles can feel hard down by, but then again, Roger Guerreiro's strike was almost certainly offside. There's still a slim chance of one of the two sides reaching the next stage, but with Germany only needing a draw against Austria, it looks highly unlikely. Poland 1-1 Austria.
92' GOAAAAL!!!!
Vastic - Austria's player of the year - becomes the oldest ever Euro scorer, smashing the penalty past Artur Boruc. 1-1.
91' PENALTY!
Austria have a last gasp penalty. Bak was at fault...
89' TIME ADDED ON
Just minutes remain for the Austrians to salvage a point...
86' TIRED LEGS
Austria can't hold onto the ball, which suits the Poles. Not long left, but still enough time for a goal...
85' SHUT UP SHOP TIME
Leo Beenhakker appears happy to just pack the defence and hold on to a slender 1-0 advantage - Rafal Murawski replaces goalscorer and fan favourite Roger Guerreiro.
82' POLAND CHANGE
Southampton's Marek Saganowski makes way for Lobodzinski, who impressed in Poland's 2-0 defeat to Germany last time out.
80' HOPES OF A NATION
The Austrian tabloids have been deeply critical of fellow co-hosts Switzerland's exit last night at the hands of Turkey. Revenge will be sweet...
78' CORNER AFTER CORNER
Austria win a string of corners, but the delivery is simply woeful! Not what you need when you're chasing the game.
75' LAST THROW OF THE DICE
Last chance saloon for Austria, as Saumel comes on in place of Aufhauser.
72' PRODL RULED OUT
Sebastian Prodl will miss Austria's clash against Germany. The Austrian defender goes straight into the book for a silly sliding challenge.
69' JUST OVER!
Jacek Krzynowek unleashes a ferocious drive, which sails agonisingly wide with the 'keeper glued to the spot. So close!
67' SUBSTITUTIONS
A double change from Josef Hickersberger sees Ivica Vastic and Roman Kienast replacing Andreas Ivanschitz and the ineffective Roland Linz.
64' MACHO, MACHO MAN
Superb 'keeping from Juergen Macho keeps Austria's hopes alive. The Austrian shot-stopper pulls off a fine double save to keep out Jacek Bak and then Lewandowski on the rebound.
61' CARD HAPPY
Howard Webb's having a great time. The English referee dishes out his third yellow card in quick succession to the petulant Jacek Krzynowek.
58' POLAND ON TOP
Austria look out of ideas, while Poland look comfortable, soaking up the pressure and hitting the co-hosts on the counter.
56' WASILEWSKI BOOKED
Wasilewski upends Korkmaz and deservedly gets booked.
53' YELLOW CARD
Korkmaz goes into the book following a rash challenge on Saganowski. He just couldn't keep up with the nippy Pole.
50' PENALTY???
Ivanschitz eventually goes down under a challenge from Pawel Golanski in the box, but referee Howard Webb waves play on.
49' SLOW START
Not much going on in the early stages of the second half, with neither side yet to hit second gear.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half's underway in Vienna. Poland's Golanski replaces Jop, while Austria line up as they were.
45' HALF TIME
A remarkable first half comes to an end in Vienna, with Poland one goal to the good. Austria came out of the blocks flying, carving open the Polish back-line on numerous occasions. Indeed, but for the 'keeping of Boruc, Poland would be dead and buried by now. The Austrians were punished on the half hour mark, when Roger Guerreiro tapped home Poland's first chance of the game. Poland dominated thereafter, pulling Austria around the park. A massive offside shout for the goal, perfectly summing up Austria's evening so far.Poland 1-0 Austria.
44' INCHES AWAY
Prodl's a whisker away from nodding home Leitgeb's flighted free kick, with the goal gaping.
43' POOR DELIVERY
Ivanschitz bends one into the box, but it's easy for the Polish back-line. They'll defend those all day!
40' POLAND PRESS
Poland stride forward on the counter and win a corner. Smolarek whips it in, but Macho gets a hand on it to punch clear.
37' NICE TRY
Juergen Macho makes a decent stop, getting down quickly to Krzynowek's speculative drive.
35' DEFLATED
Austria look shaken after conceding the opener. If they're not careful, Poland could run away with it.
32' NO JOY
It's harsh on the Austrians, but the Poles are edging this one now. They've only got themselves to blame, mind...
29' GOAAAAL!!!!
What a blow! Against the run of play, Poland take the lead. Saganowski gets the better of Pogatetz, teeing up Brazilian-born Roger Guerreiro for a simple tap-in. The cross took a couple of deflections on the way, but they all count. Poland 1-0 Austria.
26' WEATHERING THE STORM
Poland look happy to play keep-ball much to the displeasure of the home fans. To be fair though, it really should be 3-0. Kudos to Mr. Boruc!
24' TIDY DEFENDING
Garics puts an end to a promising Polish move, stepping in before stroking the ball back to his 'keeper.
22' WHAT A HERO!
Poland really cannot defend! Artur Boruc saves the day for the fourth time, rushing out spread-eagle to deny Leitgeb.
20' POOR EFFORT
He's not a goalscorer this lad - Krzynowek flashes a shot well wide. Poor!
18' HIGH AND WIDE
Smolarek concedes possession on the halfway line, Austria break before Ivanschitz pops one over the bar.
16' AUSTRIA ON TOP
Poland fall to sleep once more at the back, but Austria just cannot score for love nor money. This time Linz breaks free, only to be foiled by a fine Boruc save.
14' SHOULD HAVE SCORED!
It's all Austria. Artur Boruc is on hand though, to deny Harnik from just eight yards out. Really should have scored!
12' WHAT A CHANCE!
The Poles are at sixes and sevens at the back, but Harnik arrows his effort wide of the post with just the 'keeper to beat.
10' SIMPLE SAVE
Andreas Ivanschitz also known as the 'Austrian Beckham' gets hold of one, but it's straight at the 'keeper.
8' POSITIVE START
Austria look lively in the opening stages of this one. Andreas Ivanschitz has a crack, which sails wide.
5' DEFENDING IN NUMBERS
Poland have plenty of men behind the ball, allowing neither time nor space for the Austrians to forge an opening.
3' FOUL PLAY
English referee Howard Webb awards Austria the game's first free kick following Saganowski's lunge on Pogatetz. The delivery is poor though, and Poland clear their lines.
1' WE'RE OFF
The game's underway in Vienna. Worryingly for Austria, Hickersberger's side are without a win in their last nine games on home turf. Moreover, Poland have won their last two matches against the Austrians.
0' TEAM NEWS
Both sides make three changes ahead of the clash. Gyorgy Garics, Christoph Leitgeb, Umit Korkmaz and Roland Linz come into the Austrian XI. Leo Beenhakker meanwhile, hands Mariusz Jop, Brazilian-born Roger Guerreiro and Marek Saganowski places in Poland's starting XI. After Croatia's 2-1 win over Germany, a win for Austria or a draw will send the Croats through to the quarter-finals, but it's still all to play for in Group B.
0' PREVIEW
Co-hosts Austria welcome Poland to the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna, well aware that a defeat for either side could end their hopes of grabbing a place in the last eight of Euro 2008 after defeats to Croatia and Germany respectively. Widely tipped to be the tournament's whipping boys, Austria weren't actually that bad against Croatia, despite becoming the sixth host nation to lose their opening match at a European Championship tournament. Tonight though, Josef Hickersberger's side must go for broke in an all or nothing clash. The Poles meanwhile, showed glimpses of quality during their 2-0 defeat to Germany, but without the injured Maciej Zurawski, Leo Beenhakker's troops could stuggle to find the back of the net for the second time in succession. Roger Guerreiro is expected to fill the boots of Zurawski, while Jakub Wawrzyniak could replace off the pace Pawel Golanski at left-back. Do or die for both sides in Vienna, so expect a frenetic 90 minutes of end to end action.
