FULL TIME SPAIN 4-1 RUSSIA A convincing win for Spain who, if they can keep this up, look very decent bets to win the tournament. Mind you, that's been said many times before, so perhaps we shouldn't get carried away just yet. In the end Russia were shown up for being an inexperienced young team and made far too many defensive mistakes. Still, a highly entertaining game and the soaked Spanish fans in Innsbruck will celebrate long into the night.
90'
GOAL! SPAIN 4-1 RUSSIA Spain go up the other end and grab a fourth. Villa chips a pass to Xavi whose shot is palmed straight into the path of Fabregas, who despite looking offside nods into the corner to make it 4-1. Icing on the cake for Spain.
88'
GOOD CHANCE The game has at least been livened up a bit by that goal, and Russia are looking more adventurous now with the smell of a miracle comeback in the air. They break at pace and Pavluchenko's cross is charged out for a corner. The resulting ball in from Zyryanov is cleared but sent back in for Semak, who finds room for a shot just eight yards out, but it's straight at Casillas. Disappointing finish.
86'
GOAL! SPAIN 3-1 RUSSIA Russia, and Pavluchenko, have a deserved goal. Shirokov flicks on a corner into the path of Pavluchenko who heads into the roof of the net, leaving Casillas with no chance. A mere consolation, though.
85'
DAZED AND CONFUSED Casillas looks dazed and confused but is on his feet. The game is being played like a friendly now - Russia are demoralised.
83'
CLASH OF HEADS There's a nasty clash of heads in the box as Casillas and Pavluchenko bump into each other attacking the ball from a free kick. The keeper has come off worse and he's receiving treatment.
81'
NEARLY JUST REWARD Pavluchenko nearly get the goal his hard-working performance has deserved, shooting powerfully from 20 yards but the effort flashes wide of Casillas' post.
78'
FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE Well, aside from a good Russian spell the start of this half they've been thoroughly outplayed by Spain who for me have put in the performance of the tournament so far. Torres and Villa look outstanding up front, but it's the midfield who have made Spain tick today. Senna and Xavi have produced faultless performances, keeping the ball with impressive ease.
77'
FINAL CHANGE Final change from Aragones, who replaces David Silva with Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.
75'
GOAL! SPAIN 3-0 RUSSIA Game over. A quick-fire counter-attack sees Fabregas release Villa, who cuts inside onto his right foot and slots the ball with ease past Akinfeev. That completes a devastating hat-trick from the Valencia striker. Thoroughly impressive stuff.
73'
SILVA OVER THE BAR Spain dilly-dally with the ball on the edge of the box, feigning to shoot a few times through Cazorla and Villa, before Silva fires over the bar.
72'
SNAP-SHOT Pavluchenko gets in a snap-shot from just outside the box but it's straight at Casillas.
70'
SURPRISE CHANGE Another surprise substitution, this time from Russia. Bystrov, who only came on at half time, is replaced by Adamov, who is more of a traditional striker. That'll mean a 4-4-2 for Guus Hiddink's team. Time really running out for them now though.
66'
GREAT DEFENDING Superb break from Spain which culminates in Ramos bursting down the right and crossing for Villa in the six yard box, before Shirokov gets in a vital interception for a corner. From the corner Senna plants a free header straight at Akinfeev.
65'
ALERT KEEPING Villa comes deep and threads a pass towards the advancing Fabregas, but keeper Akinfeev is alert to the danger and rushes out to clear.
63'
SPAIN CHANGE Iniesta is replaced by the defensive-minded Cazorla.
62'
BAMBOOZLED Once again the Russia back two are completely bamboozled by pretty basic passing from Spain. Silva attempts a one-two with Villa and nearly gets on the end of it in front of goal, but Russia clear and live to fight on.
60'
GOAL NEEDED Bilyaletdinov tries his luck from 25 yards but he drags the shot wide. You feel that a Russia goal has to come soon if they're going to get a point out of this game.
58'
VILLA SHOT Spain counter-attack through Villa and he shoots as Russia's defence opens up for him. It's straight at the keeper though. This Russian defence continues to look amateur at best.
57'
ANOTHER CHANGE Semshov is replaced by Dmitry Torbinsky, an attacking midfielder.
54'
SPAIN SUBSTITUTION A surprise substitution for Spain as dangerman Torres is withdrawn and replaced by Fabregas. That'll mean a 4-5-1 for Spain with Fabregas looking to support lone frontman Villa. Russia's back two are doing handstands with delight.
53'
CRUISING Russia continue to push Spain back in their search for a route back into this match. Spain are cruising - a dangerous game.
50'
GOOD PRESSURE Zhirkov fires in a dangerous free kick on the left but Torres is back to clear. Bystrov then gets free down the left but his low cross is cleared by Marchena with Pavluchenko lurking in the middle. The resulting corner is played short, and dinked onto the head of the unmarked Bystrov but his header is straight at Casillas. Good pressure this from the Russians.
48'
IMPACT Bystrov looks to make an immediate impact, taking on Spain left back Capdevila but running the ball out for a goal kick.
46'
SECOND HALF Russia kick us off for the second half. Guus Hiddink has made a half time substitution, with right winger Vladimir Bystrov replacing Sychev.
45'
HALF TIME SPAIN 2-0 RUSSIA That second was perhaps a little hard on Russia who have more than played their part so far with some easy-on-the-eye attacking football, but they were unable to cope with Torres and Villa who looked likely to score every time they had the ball within shooting range of Russia's goal. Unless the Russian back four sort themselves at the back they could be in for a thrashing. Still, great game, and the second half promises more of the same.
44'
GOAL! SPAIN 2-0 RUSSIA Spain counter attack from a poor Russia corner and Iniesta bewilders the defence before slotting through to Villa with a sumptuous pass and the Valencia man makes no mistake, slotting under the keeper for his and Spain's second. Lovely stuff.
42'
PAVLUCHENKO EFFORTS Pavluchenko lines up a free kick 25 yards out. The first attempt is blocked but the rebound falls to him and he smacks it against the bar with Casillas floundering. However the whistle had blown for a foul on Silva as he was barged out of the way for the second attempt.
40'
FIVE TO HALF TIME Russia will be happy to get to half time just a goal down and re-group in the dressing room. Can Hiddink work his magic once again?
36'
RUN RAGGED Without the ball on the break this Russian side look devoid of ideas. Torres meanwhile continues to run them ragged at the back and without some crucial last ditch challenges he could have been through on goal a couple of times in two minutes.
33'
GOOD DEFENDING Russia continue to look dangerous in Spain's third of the pitch. Bilyaletdinov wins the ball off a hesitant Iniesta and tries to play in Zyryanov, but Spanish captain Puyol does well to clear.
31'
BAD CALL Kolodin plays a smashing ball through to Zyryano who is free in the box on the left - but incorrectly flagged offside.
29'
CRACKING GAME Left-back Zhirkov pushes forward and wins a corner off Ramos. The resulting delivery is poor though and Spain clear. Cracking game so far, very open for the last 20 minutes and I wouldn't rule Russia out of this at all.
28'
VILLA SHOT Villa forces a chance out of nothing. With his back to goal he turns Shirokov and shoots from a tight angle, but Akinfeev is equal to it and palms the ball away. Spain's front two look mighty dangerous.
27'
OLE Nice spell of possession for Spain and the crowd give it the old 'ole' for a couple of minutes. Russia are struggling to keep the ball for such lengths of time but look really dangerous on the break.
24'
TORRES ON FIRE Two good chances for Spain in the form of Torres. The first is a good one, from a lovely Iniesta pass the striker clips just wide with keeper Akinfeev advancing. He then tries his luck from 20 yards but it's straight at the keeper.
23'
OFF THE POST! Sychev bursts down the right and drills the ball into the box - it somehow evades the whole Spainish defence and drops to Zyryanov but he smashes the ball against the post from eight yards out. Unlucky my son.
20'
GOAL! SPAIN 1-0 RUSSIA Oh dear, oh dear. Kolodin is chased down by Torres at the back and wilts under the pressure, gifting the ball to the Liverpool striker who squares for Villa to tap into an empty net as keeper Akinfeev had rushed out. A bad mistake and it's been punished.
20'
OPENING UP Russia are gaining in confidence and coming out of their shells a bit now - they can play football, no doubt about that. Spain are in for a fight here.
18'
VILLA SELFISH Villa creates space for himself in the box but decides to shoot from an acute angle rather than cut back for Torres. It's blocked for a corner which comes to nothing - Torres doesn't look happy with his team-mate.
17'
GREAT CHANCE Best chance of the game and Russia nearly take the lead. They get good numbers forward for the first time in the game and slice open Spain through Anyukov down the right. He cuts back for Semshov who is all alone in the box but he drags his shot wide.
15'
SILVA BURST Silva breaks off the shackles of Anyukov and bursts towards the area before shooting low at goalkeeper Akinfeev. Decent effort, but no problems for the keeper.
15'
PATTERN OF PLAY Russia's game-plan is clear - smother the Spanish attack and look for a goal on the break. They're defending in numbers and Spain look devoid of ideas so far. But it's still early days.
13'
FUSSY REF According to the fussy Austrian ref football is a non-contact sport. Every slight nudge is being punished with a free kick here.
11'
PAVLUCHENKO WASTEFUL Zhirkov wins the ball off Silva with a cracking challenge in midfield and Russia break quickly with some nice one-touch passes. The ball falls to Pavluchenko and he wastes possession on the left not once, but twice, and Spain have a goal kick.
9'
SETTING THE PACE Sergio Ramos plays a long diagonal pass to Villa in the area but his touch allows two defenders to close him down and the eventual shot is sliced over. Spain starting to set the pace now.
8'
TORRES SHOT Torres announces his arrival in the game as he comes left to receive the ball before cutting inside and shooting just wide of Akinfeev's post. That's pretty ominous for the Russians.
7'
THUNDER The weather is doing its best to add to the already boisterious atmosphere as a rumble of thunder bellows around the ground.
6'
EVEN-STEPHEN Iniesta loses possesion in the middle but Pavluchenko can't take advantage on the break as his pass is poor. Even stuff so far, with both teams still sussing each other out.
5'
FIRST ATTACK Spain win a free kick of their own in a promising position on the left, but Xavi's delivery is poor and Russia clear with ease.
4'
GOOD START Good start from Russia who have settled earlier here. They win a free kick on the left which Zhirkov whips in left footed, and Casillas has to be helped out by his defence as he flaps wildly at the ball.
3'
YOUTH ON THEIR SIDE Plenty of youth on display today - Russia have the youngest squad in Euro 2008 and Spain have the third youngest.
1'
KICK OFF Spain get us underway. Today's referee is Konrad Plautz, an Austrian.
0'
ANTHEMS The national anthems of both nations are belted out with serious gusto and we're just about ready for the off. It's absolutely teeming down with rain in Innsbruck.

TEAM NEWS No Cesc Fabregas for Spain - boss Aragones cites the fact that he hasn't played for the last 30 days as the reason. In his place comes Brazilian-born veteran Marcos Senna, while David Silva will provide the width. Russia have no fresh injuries worries and include recalled midfielder Sergei Semak, who was dropped for the whole qualifying campaign.

RUSSIA - THE LOWDOWN Russia are many people's dark horses to spring a surprise or two and with Guus Hiddink at the helm you wouldn't bet against it. The Dutchman has a track record for getting international teams to perform way above expectations, as when he took South Korea to the semi finals of the 2002 World Cup, and guided Australia to the knockout stages four years later. Russia have a few talented players in their ranks as England can testify from their defeat to Moscow last year, none more so than Andrei Arshavin, who is unfortunately suspended for the first two games of the tournament. Without him, and injured striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, Russia will look to Spartak Moscow forward Roman Pavlyuchenko, who fired two goals against England in that win, to provide inspiration.

SPAIN - THE LOWDOWN The pre-tournament favourites of many experts and football fans around the globe finally get their chance to show us what they're made of this year. The biennial hype which forever bills Spain as the 'one to watch' at major tournaments actually looks justified this time around, with manager Luis Aragones having a wealth of talent at his disposal. They have arguably the tournament's most potent strikeforce in Fernando Torres and David Villa, flair and tenacity in midfield with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta, and a solid defence with Carlos Puyol and Sergio Ramos sitting in front of world class keeper Iker Casillas. The big question with Spain, as always, is will they bottle it when the going gets tough?

PREVIEW A cracking game lies in store as Group D gets underway at the Stadion Tivoli Neu in Innsbruck, with pre-tournament favourites Spain taking on Russia. After Holland and Germany set the early tournament pace with convincing victories, Spain will be looking to make a big impression of their own and justify the hype which surrounds Luis Aragones' men. Russia will be no pushover though, and with Greece and Sweden the other two teams in the group, Guus Hiddink will be confident his team can qualify for the knockout stages. The tournament came to life with the feast that Holland and Italy served up last night, and this encounter could prove to be just as exciting - both teams play attractive attacking football so goals look on the cards. We'll have the all-important team news shortly.
