Germany v Poland
Time Commentary
93' FULL TIME
The final whistle goes on a comfortable win for Germany. Two goals from Podolski, one in either half, have given the German's the perfect start to a tournament in which they will hope to go all the way. Poland simply defended badly and gave Germany and string of chances, with Podolski converting the two that count. The first was a simple tap in, while the second was a stunning volley after a miss-hit from Klose had diverted the ball into his path. It was an entertaining if slightly one-sided game that ended Germany 2-0 Poland.
90' SUBSTITUTION
Klose makes way for Kuranyi in a straight swap for the final few moments for Germany.
88' OVER THE BAR
Podolski fires a great shot over the bar as Germany dominate the closing moments of this game.
86' POOR CHALLENGE
Ballack gets dragged down by a late challenge as Poland start to look like they know they've lost this one.
84' GREAT SHOT
Hitzlsperger let fly but his shot was always rising and went well over the bar.
83' GREAT CHANCE
Guerreiro fires in a great ball that's flicked on and almost finds a way past Lehmann at his near post... but the keeper bundles it away and his defenders clear the danger.
80' TAME SHOT
Schweinsteiger takes a pop from 30 yards but never really looked like troubling the 'keeper.
79' CLOSE CALL
Hitzlsperger works well to keep the ball in on the left and fires in a great cross that is just taken away from Schweinsteiger when he was lining up a spectacular volley.
77' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Frings bursts onto a ball in the box but can't bring it down under control when there were players well placed in the centre.
75' SUBSTITUTION
Golanski makes way for Saganowski as Poland go for broke in the final 15 minutes.
74' SUBSTITUTION
Hitzlsperger replaces Gomez for Germany as they look to consolidate their two goal lead.
72' GOOAALL!!!
Podolski makes it two for Germany with a stunning finish from 10 yards. Schweinsteiger won the ball in the area, flicked it up for Klose who miss-hit his shot but it went straight to Podolski who thundered a volley into the top corner. 2-0.
69' TOP SAVE
Boruc tips over Ballack's superb drive to keep Poland in it. What a great save!
67' CALLS FOR A FOUL
Podolski, who's now playing through the middle, goes down rather easily and calls for a free kick on the edge of the area, but nothing is given.
64' SUBSTITUTION
Lobodzinski is replaced by Piszczek for Poland.
62' YELLOW CARD
Schweinsteiger has come on for Fritz and has already been booked. Quite an auspicious start!
61' OFFSIDE?
Smolarek is adjudged to be offside but replays show he probably wasn't. That's a shame as the Poland attacker was clean through and would have scored were it not for the flag.
59' YELLOW CARD
Lewandowski picks up a booking for a terrible challenge on Podolski. That was a thoroughly deserved yellow card.
58' DANGEROUS MOMENT
Guerreiro had time and space to pick out his man with a cross but could only find the first defender. Poor cross!
56' LOVELY PASSING
Frings sprays a lovely pass wide to Lahm who whips in a great cross that Klose almost latches onto.
54' FIZZED WIDE
Krzynwek lets fly with a fizzing shot that goes just wide of Lehmann's near post. That was a great effort from the Polish attacker.
53' COMFORTABLE SAVE
Guerreiro has a shot from a wide angle which never really worried Lehmann who made a comfortable save.
50' ANOTHER OFFSIDE
Lobodzinski gets caught offside when there was really no need. It's been a much brighter performance from Poland so far in the second half even though they haven't carved out a genuine chance.
49' OFFSIDE
Smolarek is adjudged offside when well placed to form a dangerous Poland attack. That's a let off for the Germany defence.
47' FLASHING CROSS
The substitute Guerreiro flashed a cross across the box but nobody could get on the end of it.
46' SECOND HALF
Germany get the second half underway and Poland have made a change with Zurawski making way for Guerreiro.
45' HALF TIME
Germany go in a goal up at the break. It's been a lively half of football which Germany have dominated, with Podolski, Klose and Gomez causing havoc in a slow Polish defence. Klose wasted an early chance but made amends after 20 minutes when he set up Podolski for a simple tap-in. Poland have looked dangerous in spells but Germany will expect to score more in the second half. It's Germany 1-0 Poland.
44' POOR CHALLENGE
Podolski gets dragged down amidst allegations of stamping. It's been a bad-tempered affair in Austria.
43' POOR CROSS
The delivery into the box was poor again from Poland and was well over the head of Zurawski.
40' SCRAPPY STUFF
It's all a little scrappy in the midfield battle with neither side gaining an upper hand.
38' YELLOW CARD
Smolarek picks up a booking for a very soft challenge. He was unlucky to get punished for that.
37' SHOULD HAVE BEEN TWO
Fritz bursts clear down the right and crosses to Gomez who scuffs his shot wide. Klose almost managed to flick Gomez's wayward shot goal-wards but just couldn't make a connection.
34' ALMOST THE EQUALISER
Zurawski almost grabs the equaliser for Poland but slides his effort wide of the far post when he should have scored.
32' LAST-DITCH DEFENDING
Podolski almost got on the end of a testing Jansen delivery but the last Poland defender just managed to cut out the cross.
30' HITS THE WALL
Ballack fires his free kick straight into the wall and Poland clear the danger.
29' FREE KICK
Ballack gets brought down 30 yards out and has a chance to let fly from distance.
28' KLOSE GOES CLOSE
Klose almost latches onto a driven cross from Jansen but can't quite get a toe to the ball.
27' FOUL THROW
That looked like a foul throw from Poland but the ref allowed them to take it again! New rule?
25' CORNER TO GERMANY
Fritz wins a corner for Germany but it's badly over-hit by Podolski and goes out for a throw.
23' GOOD DEFENDING
Good defending from Germany as they deal with a dangerous ball in from the right from Poland.
20' GOOAALL!!!
Podolski gives Germany the lead! Klose broke clear of the defence again and squared the ball for Podolski who had the easiest of tap-ins. 1-0 Germany.
18' WASTE OF POSSESSION
Metzelder marauds forward from the back but gives away possession leaving Germany exposed on the break.
16' OFFSIDE
Gomez flicks a ball into the Poland box and it reaches Metzelder who's well offside.
15' DANGEROUS DELIVERY
Metzelder almost gets on the end of a dangerous cross but the ball is flicked out for a corner to Germany.
13' LEHMANN'S MISTAKE
Lehmann slides out to collect the ball but spills it and very nearly gifts a chance to Poland. The experienced 'keeper has looked poor so far.
11' ALMOST A CHANCE
The ball very nearly fell to Klose in the six yard box after a Podolski shot but the defender just got there first to clear the danger.
10' WAS IT A DIVE?
Podolski goes down easily but nothing is given. Surely the German should have been booked if he dived.
8' TEASING CROSS
Zurawski whips in a dangerous cross which zips across the six yard box and away from danger.
6' POOR CHALLENGE
Podolski gives away a free kick for a poor challenge out on the left hand side.
4' JUST WIDE
Klose bursts clear but opts to pass rather than shoot and Gomez can only slide his effort wide of the post. One of the two of them should have scored!
2' NERVOUS 'KEEPING
Lehmann hesitates again and only good defending from Metzelder keeps the Polish attackers at bay.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Lehmann makes an early blunder in goal for Germany, colliding with his own defender and almost gifts an early chance to Poland.
0' POLAND
Poland are a tough unit to break down and with a manager like Leo Beenhakker are always capable of springing a surprise. Watch out for Smolarek who netted 9 times in qualifying.
0' GERMANY
Germany have a strong side going into their first game of this tournament, with Ballack given the opportunity to run the show in the middle alongside Frings and with Klose up front to tuck the goals away. The sensational striker has 39 goals in 74 games and will surely add to that tally in Austria and Switzerland.
0' GERMANY V/S POLAND
Germany and Poland are two countries that really don't get on. The fans have proved just that, with scenes of violence during the build up to this game, and let's hope that there's no repeat of such violence during or after the game at the Wothersee Stadium. Germany will go into the game as favourites but Poland are more than capable of springing a surprise after topping a qualification group which included the likes of Portugal, Serbia, Belgium and Finland. We should be in for a cracker here as both sides like to get forward and both will be looking to show their class after Croatia set the early pace in the group with their earlier win over Austria.
