FULL TIME The ref brings an end to a thoroughly entertaining game that just lacked quality in the final third. Modric's fourth minute penalty sealed the win for Croatia in the end and Pogatetz was lucky to stay on the pitch for Austria, but it was a thoroughly even encounter, particularly in a second half during which the Austrians fought back. Unfortunately for the hosts, they just couldn't find the back of the net and Croatia clung on for the win. It finished Croatia 1-0 Austria.

LATE CHANCE Kienast gets his head to an Ivanschitz free kick and almost grabs the equaliser for Austria but watches his effort go just past the post.

PANIC AT THE BACK Austria clear the danger but it was panic in the box for a moment there. There could just be a chance for a late equaliser.
89'
GREAT CHANCE Corluka whips in a cross and Budan almost turns it home but his effort is deflected wide for a corner.
87'
WASTED POSSESSION Budan wastes possession and gifts Austria the opportunity to launch a late attack.
85'
DANGEROUS DRIVE Korkmaz has a go with a long distance drive and his shot is destined for the bottom corner until the 'keeper intervenes with a decent save.
83'
HANDBALL APPEALS The Austrian fans scream for a penalty after it looked like Knezevic may have handled the ball in the box... but nothing is given.

77'

76'
GOOD CHANCE Standfest beats two men down the left for Austria and wins a free kick for his side.
73'
POOR 'KEEPING Pletikosa flaps at another cross and is lucky that his clearance falls to the feet of one of his defenders and not an Austrian attacker.
70'
OVER THE BAR Ivanschitz has another opportunity to show off his cultured left foot but fires his shot over the bar.
68'
SUBSTITUTION Korkmas comes on for Gercaliu as the Austrians try to liven things up.
67'
YELLOW CARD Prodl picks up a booking for a cynical challenge on the edge of the area.
66'
ABYSMAL DELIVERY Olic had time and space on the left to whip in a cross but his effort simply dribbled into the first defender. What a poor attempt!
64'
POOR CROSS Pranjic beat a number of men down the left but his cross in could only find Pogatetz who cleared the danger with a towering header.
60'
SUBSTITUTIONS Sumel makes way for Vastic, the only player in Austria's squad with previous major tournament experience. Meanwhile Knezevic replaces Kranjcar for Croatia.
58'
MODRIC CAUSES PROBLEMS Modric worked hard down the right and carved out a crossing opportunity, but the delivery was poor. However the midfield dynamo was able to win the ball back for a second attempt that won his side a corner and almost more.
56'
WASTED CHANCE Gercaliu fires a ball across the box when, with a bit of patience, he may have carved out a decent chance. What a waste!

51'
EDGE OF THE BOX Prodl had time to get a shot away on the edge of the box but delayed and was robbed of possession.
49'
SRNA'S PACE Srna wins the ball with a strong challenge and bursts down the right flank. The Croatian winger looks dangerous this afternoon.
47'
AUSTRIAN FLAIR Austria have flown out of the blocks since half-time but have yet to carve out a real chance. This time Ivanschitz, the 'Austrian Beckham', has a shot but it goes well over the bar.
46'
SECOND HALF Croatia get the second half underway but immediately it's Austria who launch a slick attacking move.
45'
HALF TIME The ref brings a hugely entertaining first half to an end. For the first 20 minutes it was all Croatia with Modric running the show and it was the little Tottenham midfielder who gave his side the lead when he converted a fourth minute penalty after Olic was fouled in the box. Austria looked out of their depth but in the last 10 minutes of the half came right back into the game and could easily have equalised. It's been a great game so far and let's hope for more of the same in the second half.
44'
PASSIONATE CROWD The crowd are in full voice in Vienna as a high-tempo first half comes to an end.
41'
JUST OVER Ivanschitz should have done better when he had time and space to get a header back across goal but he just couldn't keep the ball down. It's been a promising spell from Austria in the last five minutes.
40'
A GOOD CHANCE Harnik finds himself in space in the Croatian box but just couldn't get the ball past the first defender at the near post.
39'
TESTING CROSS Standfest whips in a testing cross that Pletikosa could only just reach to beat away to safety.
37'
LIGHTENING ATTACK Croatia break with pace and only a last-ditch challenge prevents Petric from bursting clear.
36'
DANGER DOWN THE FLANKS Croatia look extremely strong down the flanks with Olic and Srna causing chaos.
34'
OVER THE BAR Petric gets on the end of a cross-field pass and bursts clear into the area, but his shot from a wide angle was always going over. That was a good chance.
33'
TOUGH TACKLING Neither side are hanging back from the challenges and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a sending off at some point.
30'
A GREAT MOVE Corluka threads a beautiful pass forward for Croatia but Petric just couldn't quite get on the end of it.
28'
LUCKY, LUCKY BOY Pogatetz brings down Olic virtually on the goal line but gets away with just a ticking off rather than a second yellow card.
26'
A CLOSE CALL Prodl connects with a decent delivery into the box but his header goes agonisingly wide. That was better from the host side though.
23'
WASTED OPPORTUNITY Lovely combination play between Modric and Kranjcar set Olic away down the left but he went for a spectacular shot that went horribly wrong when surely a cross would have been the better option.
22'
SHOT FROM DISTANCE Aufhauser has a shot from distance but doesn't really connect well and the ball dribbles into the 'keeper's arms.
21'
INTO THE WALL Srna blasts the free kick straight into the wall and Austria manage to clear the danger.
20'
YELLOW CARD Saumel gets a booking for a bad challenge and gives away a free kick in a dangerous area.
17'
SPECTACULAR SHOT Prodl let fly from distance but the Austrian's shot never looked like troubling the 'keeper and drifted harmlessly past the post.
15'
CORNER CHAOS Srna whips in a dangerous corner and Austria panic before scrambling the ball clear.
13'
FREE KICK CHANCE A Croatian free kick causes chaos in the Austrian defence and Olic very nearly gets on the end of it at the near post. It looked like the forward was being fouled by Pogatetz there too.
11'
HOME FANS AREN'T HAPPY The Austrian fans are whistling after another two-minute spell of comfortable Croatian possession. They really do have some classy players in midfield.
9'
WASTED POSSESSION Croatia spent the last two minutes fizzing the ball around nicely until Corluka needlessly gave the ball away. It's been an impressive start from Bilic's side though.
8'
FLOWING PASSING MOVE Modric unlocks the Austrian defence with a beautiful reverse pass but the cross in was a poor one.
6'
AUSTRIA ATTACK The host nation aren't going to give up without a fight and Sumel proves it by testing the 'keeper with an early effort from distance.
4'
GOOAALL!!! Modric sends the keeper the wrong way to give Croatia an early lead after a very bright start. 1-0!
3'
PENALTY Croatia have been awarded a penalty! Modric beat his man down the left fed Olic and a clumsy challenge from Aufhauser has gifted Croatia with an early chance. Pogatetz was also booked for complaining about the decision.
2'
CRAFTY SET-PIECE Srna threads a crafty free-kick into the Austria box before following up and winning his side a corner.
1'
WE'RE UNDERWAY Austria get the game underway and immediately it's Croatia who launch an attack through Modric.
0'
THE NATIONAL ANTHEMS Both anthems are blasted out by a very lively crowd in Vienna. 50,000 Croatian fans have descended on the city and on this evidence are more than capable of matching the noise of the home fans.

CROATIA Croatia are many peoples' dark horses to lift the trophy on the 29th of June and should make it out of their group with relative ease. Manager Slaven Bilic has been talking the talk prior to the tournament, but there are still concerns over who's going to get the ball in the back of the net what with Arsenal's Eduardo, their top-scorer in qualifying, still out with a broken leg. Many will look to Luka Modric, a new signing for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, to pull the creative strings of a Croatia side that just loves to get forward and if it comes off then Bilic's outfit could be a joy to watch.

AUSTRIA Austria don't have many star players, although Andreas Ivanschitz, who is known as the ‘Austrian Beckham', is expected to shine. Their defence is solid, with Middlesbrough's Pogatetz marshalling the troops, but it's hard to see where the goals are going to come from if Austria are even going to consider making a decent fist of getting out of the group.

AN UPSET ON THE CARDS? Today sees co-hosts Austria attempting to go one better than the Swiss did yesterday and really set this tournament alight by producing a shock result for one of the home nations. Unfortunately the extremely average Austrians are taking on the highly fancied Croatians and so any chances of an upset appear slim.
