FULL TIME The Czech Republic hung on to win 1-0 against the spirited hosts Switzerland. Neither side played particularly well but it was a decent game with plenty of action and incident. The Swiss had the chances and even hit the bar but just couldn't find the back of the net. The hosts were rocked just before half time when their star man Alexander Frei was stretchered off and it looks like he's out for the tournament. The Czech's never really got going but took the win through the substitute striker Stanislav Vlcek who broke clear after 70 minutes and slotted the ball home from 12 yards. It might not have been a classic way to start the tournament but it wasn't a bad game to say the least. It finished Switzerland 0-1 Czech Republic.
93'
HANDBALL? With Sverkos off the pitch after picking up a knock the Swiss claim for a penalty after the ball appeared to strike Ujfalusi on the arm but nothing was given.
91'
FREE KICK The Czech Republic bundle the ball clear but give away a free kick forty yards out. The Czech defenders bundle the ball away and win themselves some time after Barnetta gives away a free kick.
90'
ADDED TIME There are going to be three minutes of time added on at the end of this game.
89'
OVER THE BAR Derdiyok rises highest in the box for Switzerland but couldn't get over his header and it flew over the bar.
86'
SUBSTITUTION Kovac replaces Jarolim for the Czech Republic as they look to protect their one goal lead.
85'
SPACE ON THE BREAK The Czech's have a lot of space on the break as Switzerland throw everyone forward in search of the equaliser.
82'
SUBSTITUTIONS Vlcek comes on for Sionko for the Czech Republic while Derdiyok replaces Behrami for Switzerland.
79'
OFF THE BAR Amidst claims for handball the Swiss hit the woodwork! Behrami let fly and Cech could only parry the shot out to the substitute Vonlanthen whose effort cannoned down off the underside of the bar and was cleared to safety.
77'
SENDEROS LOOKS SHAKY Senderos rises high to head clear, but completely miss-times his leap and finds the grateful arms of his 'keeper. That's not want the home fans want to see.
75'
YELLOW CARD Vonlanthen comes on for Lichsteiner and picks up a yellow card with his second touch, a late challenge on Rozenhal.
71'
GOOAALL!! The Czech Republic take the lead! Sverkos was more alert than any of the Swiss defenders and was able to latch onto a headed through-ball and slot the ball past the keeper for the opening goal of the tournament and his first for his country.
68'
RELIEF FOR ROZENHAL Rozenhal was under pressure but was given a let off by Yakin after the Swiss striker went in a little heavy for a challenge that he should have won anyway.
65'
JUST WIDE! Yakin rises high and really should have scored from six yards but his effort went just wide of the post. The Swiss bench can't believe it!
63'
BAD CHALLENGE Barnetta pulls down Plasil on the edge of the area but Jankulovski's effort from the free kick was a poor one.
61'
OVER THE BAR! Barnetta has a pop but his effort only troubles those in row Z.
59'
A GREAT CHANCE! Sionko just couldn't get a decent connection on his header after finding space and getting on the end of a great cross from Jankulosvski.
58'
YELLOW CARD Magnin picks up the first booking of the tournament for a terrible challenge on Sionko.
55'
SUBSTITUTION Jan Koller comes off to make way for Sverkos who will slot in up front for the Czech Republic.
53'
FREE KICK Jankulovski goes for goal from distance but his effort was uncharacteristically poor. The Czech full back has had a poor game so far.
51'
OFFSIDE Fernandes was rightly given offside there after latching onto a through ball after a lung-bursting run from deep.
49'
FREE KICK Yakin goes for goal from 20 yards but his effort went over the bar and it looked like Cech always had it covered.
48'
TESTER FOR CECH Magnin lets fly from distance and it could really have troubled Cech if Yakin had managed to get the slightest of touches to divert the ball past the 'keeper... but he couldn't.
47'
FREE KICK Behrami gets pulled down by Plasil and there's a chance for Yakin to get the ball into the box... but Cech comes off his line to claim the ball in with ease.
46'
SECOND HALF We're back underway with Yakin on in place of Frei for the hosts.
45'
HALF TIME Frei limps down the tunnel without being replaced but his game and probably tournament look set to be over. The game itself has been extremely entertaining but devoid of class in front of goal. The Swiss had the pick of the chances with Behrami and Frei both testing Cech from distance, while the Czech's have looked great on the ball but rather toothless up front with the ageing Koller firing blanks so far. Let's hope we see a goal to brighten up the second half.
43'
FREI LIMPS OFF The star man in the Switzerland side limps off and looks certain to be replaced.
40'
POOR DELIVERY Jankulovski had the opportunity to whip a ball in but the full-back's usually excellent crossing let him down on this occasion.
38'
SIONKO GOES CLOSE The Czech midfielder almost wriggled free of the last man in the Switzerland box but just couldn't evade his marker.
35'
OFFSIDE! Cech is forced to punch away a fizzing drive from Frei which looked to have fallen to the feet of the onrushing Swiss attackers, but they had been too hasty and the offside flag was up.
34'
KOLLER GOES CLOSE Koller was inches away from connecting with a great cross in from the left hand side, but he just couldn't reach it.
32'
NO YELLOW CARD Fernandes somehow avoids picking up the opening booking of the tournament despite the latest in a string of poor challenges from the midfielder.
28'
NOT OFFSIDE? Koller chests the ball down in the box but the flag had gone up for offside. Replays show that that wasn't the best of decisions from the Italian linesman.
26'
HIGH CHALLENGE Sionko raises his foot and catches Magnin. It wasn't intentional so it's a free kick but nothing more.
24'
SILKY STUFF Sionko tries to thread a ball through to Koller but the ball is just cut out before it reaches the big striker.
22'
PRESSURE FROM KOLLER Big Jan Koller puts pressure on Senderos and forces the Arsenal defender into a rushed clearance that gifts possession back to the Czech's.
20'
A GREAT CHANCE! Frei got the better of his markers and had a chance to flick a shot goal-wards, but Cech made himself big and blocked the Swiss striker's effort.
17'
ACRES OF SPACE The Czech's are fizzing the ball around nicely in midfield and are taking advantage of the space they're being allowed by their less fancied opponents.
14'
CROWD FAVOURITE Behrami is clearly the crowd favourite in Basel and showed his skills again before firing in a shot that looked spectacular but never really troubled Petr Cech.
12'
GOOD SAVE Benaglio keeps his side in it with a good save after a Czech cross took a deflection and looked destined for the top corner!
9'
THE PACE SLOWS Neither side have been scared to get forward so far. Behrami in particular has shone going forward for the Swiss.
6'
ON THE BREAK The Czech's fly down the other end and win themselves a corner. This is an action-packed start to the opening game! Let's hope it's an omen of things to come.
5'
FREE KICK Plasil dives in unnecessarily and gives away a free kick out on the touch-line. That was a good chance to whip a ball in and test the Czech's at the back but the delivery was poor.
2'
FREI SHOOTS... ... and it flies wide. That's a surprisingly strong start from the hosts though.

EURO 2008 UNDERWAY The usual nonsense of the opening ceremony is out of the way, the two anthems have been sung and Euro 2008 is underway!
0'
SWISS CELEBRATIONS The safe money will certainly be on the Czech's putting a dampener on the host nation's celebrations in this one but you never know. Nobody expected an upset four years ago but an un-fancied Greek side did exactly that, setting off on the road to the title by defeating the hosts Portugal in the opening game. Could we see a massive evening of celebrations in Basel following a Swiss victory? There'll be plenty of fingers crossed…

THE CZECH'S ARE READY The Czech Republic meanwhile will be extremely disappointed if they don't progress from this group after looking in great form during qualification, securing top spot in their group with a dramatic 3-0 win in Germany. The Czech's are not the side they were four years ago, without the services of the likes of Nedved and Poborsky due to retirement and with Tomas Rosicky ruled out through injury, but they can still play some great football at times and are capable of beating anyone on their day.

THE OPENING GAME The first game up sees the co-hosts Switzerland take on the highly rated Czech Republic. Switzerland will struggle, not only in this game but also to progress from a group that contains the two sides in today's other match, Portugal and Turkey. The hosts will rely on a solid defence marshalled by Arsenal's inconsistent defender, Philippe Senderos, and will hope that their ‘Captain-Fantastic' Alexander Frei can cope with having the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders and lead the Swiss out of the group. It's a tough ask…

EURO 2008 Across Europe football fans are beside themselves with excitement as Europe's top sides are set to battle it out in Austria and Switzerland at Euro 2008. England may have failed to qualify, but with the way they played in qualifying then that's not much of a loss to a tournament that is still packed full of big names. There will be celebrations and there will be tears… there will be games to remember and probably some to forget… there will be some players that shine and some that fail to live up to the hype… but one thing that we can be sure of is that it's going to be an absolute feast of football that's served up over the next 22 days, and I for one can't wait!
